Bolivia

Description

Bolivia is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay and Argentina to the south and Chile and Peru to the west. The topography of this country is very diverse and includes: highlands in the west, lowlands in the east, and the world's largest salt flat in the southwest corner of the country. Nevado Sajama, at 21,463 feet, is the highest peak in Bolvia.

Bolivia's government consists of a balance between executive, legislative, and judicial powers. The executive does however, tend to overshadow the congress. Bolivia's government is a republic with two chambers. The Chamber of Deputies has 130 members elected to five-year terms, while the Chamber of Senators has twenty-seven members also elected to fiver year terms.

Bolivian culture is heavily influenced by the popular cultures of Latin America, especially by the Quechua and the Aymara. In May, 2001, the "Carnaval de Oruro," one of the best known festivals in the country, was among the first 19 "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity," according to the UNESCO. The national sport is soccer and is a very popular form of entertainment.
