GESI is administered by Northwestern University's Buffett Institute. Moving beyond traditional study abroad and “poverty tourism” programs, GESI provides opportunities in collaborative experiential learning—opportunities that develop global leaders while contributing to the sustainable development of communities in which our students work and learn. GESI has brought together nearly 400 students from over 70 colleges and universities around the country to learn from and work with communities in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, India, Ghana, Guatemala, Kenya, Nicaragua, and Uganda. These sites are run by our on-the-ground partners and offer students the opportunity to address issues such as health, education, environment, youth, women’s empowerment, social enterprise development, and microfinance. You are eligible for GESI if: - You are a current undergraduate, including seniors. - Northwestern students: your cumulative GPA is 2.0 to 2.5 or higher (exceptions made for students who provide written plan for raising their GPA). Non-Northwestern students: your cumulative GPA is 2.5 or higher. -For applicants to sites in Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala or Nicaragua, you have taken at least one year of college-level Spanish language courses, or the equivalent during high school. There is no language requirement for the other sites. - You are open-minded, flexible, and humble.
