* Orientation Program in Tokyo
* Mid-Program Meeting in Kyoto
* Re-Entry Program & RQI Colloquium

NSF PIRE STIPEND - $4,500

In addition to the costs that are paid for directly by the program each NanoJapan participant will received an NSF Stipend of up to $4,500 to be used towards the cost of required living costs while abroad. The stipend will be issued to students via U.S. dollar check prior to departure for Japan. NanoJapan students are responsible for ensuring that these funds are available for use while in Japan and for all currency conversion or related fees.

What is not Included: NanoJapan students may use their stipend funds to pay for the following types of expenses though students should be aware that the stipend will not be sufficient to cover all costs while in Japan. Costs will vary based on research host site though the program will ensure that the stipend amount awarded to each student is sufficient to fully cover their housing and most of their daily living expenses. Stipend funds should first be used towards housing and daily meal costs and any remaining funds may be used for other types of approved expenses.

* Housing costs during research internship period
* Daily meal costs during research internship period
* Daily transportation costs during research internship period
* Additional Japanese language instruction during the research internship period
* Transportation to/from research host lab and Tokyo
* Transportation to/from Kyoto for Mid-Program Meeting
* Lodging for one night in Tokyo prior to return to U.S.
* Tuition for Rice University Summer School
* Required Language Textbooks or Recommened Books
* Passport & any required visa fees
* CISI International Health Insurance
* Any Necessary Immunizations or Boosters
* Japanese Cell Phone Rental Fees
Estimated Costs: Costs listed are high estimates and exact costs will vary by student based on individual spending habits and research host institution placement. For example, most students will have access to a kitchen during the research internship and can greatly reduce their daily food expenses by preparing meals on their own. Other students may live on campus or within walking or biking distance of their research lab thereby reducing their daily commuting costs. An updated and more detailed budget will be provided to selected participants in April based on actual anticipated costs at their research host institution.

* This was the tuition rate for summer 2010. Summer School tuition for 2011 has not yet been set and is subject to change. This page will be updated with the final 2011 costs when that information becomes available.

** Stipend may vary slightly depending on housing and basic living costs at your research host university. All students will receive a stipend that is sufficient to fully cover housing costs and most of your daily living expenses.

Additional costs and personal spending varies by student and these costs are not required by the program. However, we encourage participants to factor some of these costs into their personal budgets to ensure that you have adequate funds available to take advantage of the many opportunities you will have while in Japan. For more information on this please see the Japan Guide: Money Matters page.

* Optional Japanese Language Study During Research Internship Period:Through our new Technical Japanese Online Modules participants will be able to continue language study online at no additional cost. However, some students may choose to supplement these online modules with enrollment in formal language classes offered by their research host university, local community, or an individual tutor. Related costs would be the responsibility of the individual student though any remaining NSF Stipend funds may be used to pay for these costs. Most NanoJapan students are able to find low-cost or free, volunteer taught language classes at their research internship site. See the Japanese Language Resources page for more information.

* Usage Charges for Piccell Wireless Japanese Cell Phone: Incoming calls are free, Japan to Japan calls 63 JPY per minute, Japan to US/Canada calls 99 to 198 JPY per minute, Japan to Australia, Europe, South America, and Asia calls 150 to 275 JPY per minute, Japan to rest of World calls 325 to 425 JPY per minute. Texts sent to a Japanese number are 7 JPY per text and to an international number are 215 JPY per text. Usage is billed to the credit card associated with your account on a monthly basis and can be monitored online.Note: Rates indicated are from summer 2010. This section will be updated with 2011 rate information, if there are any changes, in the spring.

* Independent Sight-seeing or Travel while in Japan: ($0 to $1000) depending on the amount of sight-seeing you plan to do on the weekends during the internship period. Most student opt to take 1 - 2 weekend trips during the internship to another part of Japan and a number of shorter day trips in their local region. Associated costs vary and students are encouraged to review the Japan Guide: Money Matters page for information on the wide array of travel discounts available for foreigners in Japan.

* Personal Spending/Souvenir Shopping: ($250 to $1000) Some students shop very little, some students shop a lot. Bring a realistic amount based on your personal spending habits but remember that the best memory of your time in Japan isn't what you buy; it is the friends you make and the experiences you have along the way. Your memories, friendships, and photos will last far longer than any souvenir you may buy along the way.
Program Description

This program is sponsored by Rice University. The rules to apply are those created by Rice University. Please read carefully before applying. Online applications at Rice will not open until early November.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for one of the 12 spots on the NanoJapan International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU) program you must be:

• Currently enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate student at a US institution of higher education;
• A U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
• Currently in the spring semester of your freshman or sophomore year;
• In good academic standing and not currently under any academic suspension or other disciplinary action at your home university;
• Able to express a demonstrated interest in the field of nanotechnology as it relates to THz dynamics of nanostructures

All eligible students with a strong interest in the field of physics-related nanotechnology research and desire to study in Japan are encouraged to apply. Women, underrepresented groups, and students from schools with limited research opportunities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Visas

The US is one of 62 countries that Japan has granted visa exemption status to and US citizens do not require a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. However, if you are a U.S. permanent resident who is not a citizen of one of these 62 countries, such as the People's Republic of China or India, you may face additional requirements or restrictions regarding obtaining a visa to enter Japan. If you are a U.S. permanent resident who is not a citizen of one of the 62 visa exemption countries please contact the NanoJapan program at nanojapan@rice.edu prior to applying.

Selection Criteria

Complete applications will be reviewed by the TeraNano selection committee and telephone interviews will be held with all program finalists. When reviewing applicants the NanoJapan program seeks students who:

* Have a strong and well-defined interest in nanoscale science and research as it relates to ThZ dynamics of nanstructures, though no prior research experience is required;
* Have a strong and well-defined interest in pursuit of future graduate study in a field related to nanoscale science and research;
* Have a strong and well-defined interest in international research, particularly in Japan, and a desire to develop the skills necessary to become a globally-competent scientist or engineer;
* Have a strong and well-definted interest in Japan, though no prior Japanese language or culture study is required.

Strong preference will be given to electrical engineering or physics majors though students from other fields may be considered if they can express a demonstrated interest in physics-related research in THz dynamics in nanostructures. We strongly encourage all potential applicants to review the NanoJapan Research Host Lab websites found on the NanoJapan IREU page of our website to learn more about the type of research conducted by our host laboratories. We also encourage potential applicants to review the NanoJapan Undergraduates page to learn more about the research and cultural experiences of NanoJapan Alumni.

The NanoJapan IREU program is geared towards the needs of young undergraduates who are new to scientific research and study of Japanese language and culture. If you have prior research experience or knowledge of Japan please share this information in your essays but it is more important for you to express a well-defined interest in both the research and cultural aspects of our program.

Up to twelve students from universities nationwide will be selected to participate in the NanoJapan program. In lieu of a program fee participants will be required to enroll in them Rice University Summer School for College Students for at least 1 or up to 2 academic research credits and pay applicable tuition and application fees.
