Program Description

Focus: Immersion in European Architecture

A semester-long program offering a minimum of 12 credit hours is offered each fall and spring.

The European Study Program is open to College of Architecture students in good academic standing at the fourth-year level, and to select Program 3 graduate students.

The programs are conducted at the College's study center in the 9th arrondissement of Paris by Chicago faculty and European professionals.

Paris

The curriculum centers on the architecture studio design course. Design and analytical projects address current issues through projects sited within the context of European architectural production.

The objective of the studio course is to develop an understanding of architecture and its production, potential, and complex role as an expression, or a register, of a culture's concerns and a society's preoccupations. The design studio encourages students to synthesize disparate impressions garnered from their time in Europe.

Coursework is fully integrated with travel. A number of weeklong group trips are combined with weekly (sometimes daily) visits to significant sites in Paris or its immediate environs.

The majority of time will be spent in and around Paris, but various programs will travel through France and Europe. Travel is devoted to visiting significant buildings, both historical and contemporary, and, when possible, collaborative design projects with local architects and students.

Dates estimated based on Spring 2012 calendar.
