Program Description

Every year, since 2010, the Universidad Mayor School of Architecture in Santiago, Chile has hosted an international workshop in which architecture schools from various areas of the world are invited to work together for ten days. Each guest school is represented by one professor along with five to eight students, who together with the other professors and students conceptualize, discuss and develop projects based on a specific urban-architectonic theme. On the first day of the workshop students from each university present a project related to the workshop’s theme, but from the particular viewpoint of their own city or country. (This presentation will be the end result of the summer class.) The idea is to reflect on their own conditions as to how the theme may have influenced the local architecture and urban developments. This initial presentation will serve as an introduction to the workshop theme, as well as a cultural introduction between the participants and their respective environments. Workshop participants will be divided into groups, each of which will be composed of approximately 10 students (with representation from every guest university) and will work under the guidance of 3 professors (1 guest professor and 2 professors from Universidad Mayor). At the end of the 10 days, each group will present their project to an external jury made up of professional architects, academics, government officials and/or architectural journalists.
Schools that have participated in previous workshops include: ETSAB (Barcelona), IIT (Chicago), Escola da Cidade (Sao Paulo), IUAV (Venice), University of Palermo (Buenos Aires), Universidad de la Republica (Montevideo), University of Mendoza (Mendoza) and Politecnico di Milano.

The theme of this year’s workshop is: Transformation Adjustment and Change

The workshop will focus on an area located in the Recoleta borough, between Independencia and Santiago. Inhabited during the pre-Hispanic period, it was known as La Chimba or “the other side of the river” in the Quechua language, for its location on the northern side of the Mapocho River. After the Spanish Conquest, it became a settlement for indigenous and mixed-race people. Agriculture was the primary use of the land. In the 18th century, the area underwent a major surge in population and the sale of agricultural products was consolidated, but it was not until the end of the 19th century that the actual market was built. La Vega Central principally sells food wholesale as well as retail and is completely immersed within the urban fabric of the area. However, the deterioration of particular areas, and a number of buildings either in “dis-use” or that have typologies and relationships not yet fully realized is a challenge.
Due to its central location in the city, it has great potential with its variety of intense uses, to become a vibrant area both day and night throughout the week. This will be the focus of the workshop.
